Jammin’ in Jamaica

There are few places that I have been that are as beautiful as Jamaica.  From the friendly people to the beautiful water and vibrant vegetation, it was an amazing experience.

Taking advantage of the long weekend, I sought refuge from the bitter cold in New York and enjoyed four glorious days of sunshine and culinary delights at a resort in Runaway Bay.

One of my favorite meals was at the local hangout Scotchies, near Ocho Rios, where I indulged in smoked jerk chicken, and probably the most memorable night was making smores on the beach over a bonfire.

Lying on the beach for four days eating and drinking like the ship was going down, is a true indulgent experience that I am fortunate to have had.

2012: Tall T’s blessed year

If I can say one thing about 2012 is that it was a blessed year.

I began the year by resolving to seeing the world a bit more than I was able to do in 2011.  Back in my heyday when I was Matt Damon’s assistant, I was on a plane to anywhere at any given time.  I knew I wouldn’t be able to match that—I mean, first class travel most everywhere? Supremely awesome—but I’d give it the ole’ Tall T try.  And by the grace of God I was able to have a great travel year and create wonderful memories.  I made it to Istanbul, Iceland, Texas, Quebec, China, Budapest, Miami and New England (always to my beloved New England), and will be sunnin’ my buns in Jamaica in two short weeks.  Heeeeeeeeeeeyyy!

Being featured in a Stonyfield Yogurt campaign for their Yo Toddler‘s banana pumpkin line was also a blessing.  (You never know where a modeling job will come from, especially as a no longer twenty-something  sistah, so those gigs are always welcomed.) Me holding my “son” with my ‘fro can move yogurt off the shelves as well as any other model! Heeeeeeeyyy!

And being the culinary delightress that I am, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention all the great meals that I took down in 2012.  I ate well on every one of my trips as well as at Chez Faint, thanks in large part to my jam, Fresh Direct.

I said good-bye to 2012 with a bang—grub and a little two-steppin’—and can’t wait to see what 2013 brings.  I welcome it with open arms and an open heart.

Ah, yes. The holidays.

I’m not big on celebrating the holiday season, but this year Avery, my lil Miniature Pincher, would not let it pass without hosting her very own Boogie Down Boozy Brunch.  And what a host she was.

Season’s Greetings all!

Tall T models for Stonyfield Yogurt

If it’s one thing people rarely associate me with it’s motherhood.  But as a model (more occasional these days) you get to portray most anything, and I proudly portray the mother of a toddler in a campaign for Stonyfield Yogurt.  You will find my mug on their Yo Toddler line on the banana & pumpkin flavor.

Great fun!

Saved by the serum

After being rendered largely immobile after a kickboxing incident that left me with a broken toe (don’t worry, I won), I have been feeling a bit sluggish, lethargic, and not at all like my usual active self.  To make matters worse, I was forced to limp around New York for a few days before I could get an appointment with an orthopedist to get outfitted for a nice ugly shoe.  Trust me when I say getting around New York with a foot injury is not the easiest thing to contend with; the subways, the crowded streets…a nightmare.

To maintain a semblance of physical activity I’ve been hobbling around Equinox trying to find relief through mat-based Pilates and riding the bike.  But despite all my best efforts to live my life as normal, which is impossible for up to six weeks, apparently, I’ve still felt very blah.

Enter my savior, BioEffect.  I know I’ve enthused about the BioEffect EGF Serum before, but their other two products, the Daytime Cream and Body Intensive Serum, are just as heavenly.

I gave myself a lil’ day of beauty after I ignored doctor’s orders and went dancing, much to the chagrin of my now larger swollen foot (I needed to get out!).  After doing a bit of exfoliating and applying a mask, I used the Daytime Cream and it was exactly what my skin needed.  Its luxurious silky feel and hydrating properties gave my skin the real and emotional lift it longed for.  In addition to being an anti-aging cream, it’s sans parabens and perfect for any skin type.

The BioEffect Body Intensive Serum also provided a boost.  This serum which promotes firmer skin for our sometimes problematic body parts (thighs, breasts & bum) contains the same anti-aging ingredient in their facial serum, EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), which speeds cell turnover.  It was also really nice to know that my Equinox efforts are being reinforced by this body-firming serum.

Well, honey, when I tell you that when I rubbed it on my body after applying the face cream that I felt like I was at a day spa, believe me.  It’s amazing how these two products transported me from my reality – a-couch-anchored-Netflix-watching-fractured-toe icin’-and-elevatin’-gal – to a pampered one enveloped in a cream of comfort.

I have a feeling I’m going to be visiting this “spa” quite a number of times over the next few weeks.

The 6’1 Giantess

I’m 6’1; there, I’ve said it.  That’s tall, yes – especially for a woman, but not otherworldly WNBA-playing so.  But as I have experienced over the years my height tends to invite unsolicited comments from some (I don’t want to say from short people, but I’ve never been stopped or gawked at by a tall person (i.e. anyone over 5’9) and questioned about my height, basketball ability, or being a model…).

For reasons that are lost on me, some people feel think they can say anything to me just because I am tall, have natural hair, or look like a model.  I am no where near celebrity status but some people approach me like I am. My former boss, Matt Damon, used to say that he liked walking down the street with me because I would deflect attention from him as people would notice my height first and we’d be down the street before they realized who he was.  I was even once referred to in a Details Magazine article, of which he was the subject, as a “six foot one giantess.”  Guess he was right about people taking notice.

In my experience some people assume I am [first generation] from an African tribe and think I am lying when I say I am from Illinois, become dubious when I tell them I do not model (I am a former model, I try to explain), and become defensive when I get irritated that they have asked me if I play basketball, especially if I am walking down the street, ear buds in, sunglasses on, minding my business and they have pounced on me like I am Lisa Leslie (who is 6’5).  I don’t go around asking these same people if they bowl, race cars or play golf because a)I don’t care and b)it’s none of my business if they do.

What seems to agitate me the most is when people don’t accept whatever answer I give – I don’t play basketball, I’m not a model,  I used to model but don’t really do it anymore, but occasionally, yes, No you can not touch my hair, whatever – and let it be.  But you’re so tall and skinny you should model; Did you ever think about modeling?, You should play ball! (“Where and with whom am I just going to “play ball?” and what makes you think I want to play?”  I often want to respond) I’ll bet you can dunk!…it goes on and on.

I’m the first to admit that I am blessed to be built the way I am and certainly stand tall, but in my experience people do not want to know the truth.  It’s upsetting for them to hear that, No I don’t play basketball, I used to play many moons ago, and have bad knees anyway – guess they forget that you actually have to be in shape to play, Yes I am tall but at 6’1 I’m kind of too tall for modeling, Yes I’m thin, but being 148lbs and a size 6 would need to be smaller, and, Yes I look young, but I am a dinosaur in the modeling business and happily in my fourth decade that ship has sailed.  When I’m so inclined to respond to people and tell them this, or any variation of, I am usually met with incredulity and disappointment.

Because I am approached or commented upon nearly everyday – seriously , I thought these Tall T Tales warranted something beyond a retelling in the form of a facebook status update for fear of sounding bitter or angry, which I’m not.  I simply am not interested in unsolicited life/career advice about things these people know nothing about.  It’s a different story if I am exposing myself to such questions in a public forum (i.e. delivering a talk on sports or modeling or being interviewed), but if I am minding my Ps & Qs trying to get from point A to point B, then not so much…but mostly some people should understand that they don’t have to say anything and should think twice about doing so.  I doubt they would find their intrusiveness something they would like to endure.

Just sayin’…

Rose Glowin’

While exploring the beauty scene in Istanbul, I was pleasantly surprised at many of the country’s rose-scented products.  From creams to cleansers, most of the products I tried contained rose oil, as the country is one of the worlds largest distillers of the oil, along with Bulgaria and Morocco.  The sensory experience only added to the visual experiences I was already having at every turn.

Having a Turkish Bath at the Ayasofya Hurrem Sultan Hamami was one of the greatest pleasures I had never had and will now go down as my one my most enjoyable life experiences.  Hot rose-scented water was poured over me as I lay on a marble slab, feeling both invigorated and relaxed at the same time.

Since returning to New York and its many non-rose-scented adventures, I want nothing more than to return to Istanbul and inhale all the rose that surrounded me, but, until then Aubrey Organics’s Rosa Mosqueta Rose Seed Hip Oil is my best substitute.
