Loving LaVie

The first thing I noticed about LaVie Organique’s cleanser was the delicious scent.  Its clean citrusy smell was so intoxicating that I felt like I was having a spa experience right in my bathroom.

I’d decided to try the cleanser to see if it would address my dry skin that had recently been exacerbated by the amount of air travel I’ve been doing.  I really needed something gentle, yet powerful, and I was very pleased to discover that after only a few days of use, the dry flakiness had all but disappeared.  This natural cleanser throughly cleansed my skin and added moisture, without leaving it dry and tight.

LaVie Organique’s cleanser is chock-full of organic ingredients and contains anti-oxidant properties and used with the toner and face cream (also filled with moisture-inducing anti-aging properties), my skin has been saved this winter.

The woman behind LaVie Organique, Lavinia Borcau, has also created a DVD called From My Neck Up that features a series of facial exercises that will help maintain one’s youthful appearance; and we all want that.  Just as we spend time in the gym exercising our bodies, now we can also take care of our facial muscles as well  in a noninvasive way.  Thanks Lavinia!

Tall T models for Stonyfield Yogurt

If it’s one thing people rarely associate me with it’s motherhood.  But as a model (more occasional these days) you get to portray most anything, and I proudly portray the mother of a toddler in a campaign for Stonyfield Yogurt.  You will find my mug on their Yo Toddler line on the banana & pumpkin flavor.

Great fun!

A hometown brand brings it on home

One of the great things I love about talking beauty is discovering new products, so when the Chicago-based eco-luxury line La Bella Figura came to my attention, I took notice.

It’s not enough that I am from the Chicago area that I felt a kinship with this brand, it’s more that the line is chock-full of organic and natural ingredients and the products smell yummy.

I have dry skin so I tried the Bio Active Healing Mask for Dry/Mature skin.  The first thing I noticed was how the product didn’t dry on my face like a traditional clay mask, but instead allowed my skin to remain pliable and in a more natural state while it worked it’s magic.  This was a good thing as I’m sure while it was on my face I was multi-tasking in some way and needed my face to be movable enough so I could carry on a conversation.

La Bella Figura uses only certified organic products and doesn’t participate in animal testing.  They’re also good to the earth in that they use recyclable packaging materials and I’m looking forward to using more of their products.

Saved by the serum

After being rendered largely immobile after a kickboxing incident that left me with a broken toe (don’t worry, I won), I have been feeling a bit sluggish, lethargic, and not at all like my usual active self.  To make matters worse, I was forced to limp around New York for a few days before I could get an appointment with an orthopedist to get outfitted for a nice ugly shoe.  Trust me when I say getting around New York with a foot injury is not the easiest thing to contend with; the subways, the crowded streets…a nightmare.

To maintain a semblance of physical activity I’ve been hobbling around Equinox trying to find relief through mat-based Pilates and riding the bike.  But despite all my best efforts to live my life as normal, which is impossible for up to six weeks, apparently, I’ve still felt very blah.

Enter my savior, BioEffect.  I know I’ve enthused about the BioEffect EGF Serum before, but their other two products, the Daytime Cream and Body Intensive Serum, are just as heavenly.

I gave myself a lil’ day of beauty after I ignored doctor’s orders and went dancing, much to the chagrin of my now larger swollen foot (I needed to get out!).  After doing a bit of exfoliating and applying a mask, I used the Daytime Cream and it was exactly what my skin needed.  Its luxurious silky feel and hydrating properties gave my skin the real and emotional lift it longed for.  In addition to being an anti-aging cream, it’s sans parabens and perfect for any skin type.

The BioEffect Body Intensive Serum also provided a boost.  This serum which promotes firmer skin for our sometimes problematic body parts (thighs, breasts & bum) contains the same anti-aging ingredient in their facial serum, EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), which speeds cell turnover.  It was also really nice to know that my Equinox efforts are being reinforced by this body-firming serum.

Well, honey, when I tell you that when I rubbed it on my body after applying the face cream that I felt like I was at a day spa, believe me.  It’s amazing how these two products transported me from my reality – a-couch-anchored-Netflix-watching-fractured-toe icin’-and-elevatin’-gal – to a pampered one enveloped in a cream of comfort.

I have a feeling I’m going to be visiting this “spa” quite a number of times over the next few weeks.

Tall T Talks Fashion

Today I had the wonderful opportunity to talk fashion with personal stylist and consultant Catherine Glaser, winner of Harper’s Bazaar’s Best Personal Style Award, and creator of sourceofstyleblog.com.

With the iconic Lincoln Center (home to Mercedez Benz fashion week in New York City) as our backdrop, Catherine filled me in on her work in the fashion business.

Effectively, from Iceland

I was first introduced to the Icelandic serum BIOEFFECT last summer at an event for the brand at New York’s SoHo House and I will admit that initially I was skeptical.  By skeptical I mean my first thought was, does the market really need another serum?  I did not doubt the product’s claims or efficacy, I was more curious about what made it truly different.

I went home and tried the product and the second I applied it to my face my skin was like, whoa, where have you been all my life?!  I only used a trace amount–two drops, as recommended–but it managed to cover my entire face and absorb into my skin as if it were my second skin.  The moisture was instantaneous and there was no need to add a moisturizer on top, as you often do with other serums, which can be intended to give your moisturizer a boost.  BIOEFFECT was the boost and the moisturizer all in one.  It felt amazing and I quickly became a convert to the brand.

What makes BIOEFFECT so effective and unique is that it contains the cellular activator EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor) that is a part of the body’s natural cellular renewal system. Derived from plants found in Iceland and created in barley seeds grown in volcanic pumice, EGF is the answer to faster cell renewal and fosters elasticity, firmness, and plumper skin.  I treat my body right and take care of my skin at all times, but BIOEFFECT seemed to help it along a bit faster as my skin’s rejuvenation process was accelerated.

After recently spending time in Iceland and seeing first-hand the beautiful skin of the Icelandic women, I completely understand and am glad that I am now in on their little secret.

No moisture, no problem.

Being in Reykjavik I have had to adjust to a few things that I hadn’t taken into account before leaving New York: the 24/7 daylight, the whipping wind dropping the 50 degree temperatures of their summer, and the dry air.  Of all these things the only one I can control is the effect the dry weather is having on my skin.  Give me a humid-free summer in the States any day, but combined with the wind and lower summer temps, it feels a tad like early spring when winter has just left us.  Mother nature is certainly in control of the elements here in a most grand way.  It is a unique feeling to experience the change in weather every twenty minutes or so.  Sunny, no wind, and mostly warm to overcast, blasting wind, and very chilly.  In this sense it reminds me of my years in Colorado.

It became clear to me on my first day that I would need another moisturizer that can protect my skin from these elements and provide the extra moisture I need while here without necessary looking like my face is slathered in Sno-Seal.  The answer? A wonderful line I discovered called Soley Organics.

I was so impressed (and relieved) by this moisturizer that I returned to the store to also purchase the healing hand cream, exfoliator, and clay mineral mask.

This moisturizer is made with evening primrose and wild Icelandic herbs–along with coconut and sweet almond oils, among others–and smells heavenly.  The creme is so light to the touch and melts into the skin like butter and provides a non-shiny dewy glow.  It’s light enough where it will be able to withstand a New York summer (read: crazy humidity), but is giving me the moisture I was lacking here in Iceland.

Looks like I have found another jam.

The ‘do.

I go through this every year.  I hem and haw, solicit the opinions of friends, and make myself miserable until I make a decision–which I almost always make suddenly and spontaneously–about what to do with my hair for the summer months.

I love my natural hair and wearing it in a ‘fro, but come spring when the rains set in followed by the humid summer, I am at a loss.  My ‘fro shrinks, becomes difficult to manipulate, and can be an all-around pain in the you-know-what.  So the other day as soon as I awoke I made a decision–that I would braid my hair.

Certainly, I’d considered this during my hemming and hawing stage but suddenly I felt sure about my decision.   Without overthinking this I headed to Brooklyn and a few hours later emerged with my new Senegalese Twists, which provide the style, flexibility, and function I was looking for along with a barrier to Mother Nature and her waterworks.

Time and money well spent.
